Having Better Passwords

Don’t Do This to Yourself

Understanding a little bit about passwords, and adopting one easy habit can save you terrible headache and heartache later on.

Having good security practices does not mean you are living in fear – in fact, we think it is more fearful to ignore this problem and hope that hacking doesn’t happen to you.

What is a Hacker?

Hackers are people who make a really good living by taking advantage of bad passwords and getting into your important accounts. When this happens to you, it feels like an attack and a violation, and it can badly disrupt your life and business.

Password hackers are pretty sneaky. Hackers don’t simply guess at your password. The favored method is to find your social media and discover the names of your pets and close relatives. They try variations on those first.

If that doesn’t work, they can use a program to send through millions of different password combinations, until they find the one that works.

If you have any kind of information in that account they just got into, they can use that to wiggle their way into other accounts until they get to the important ones, like your bank. Read more about hackers and how they operate.

Stop Hackers for Good

The solution is to have really excellent passwords.

Here’s how you do it:

  • Never use any personal information, such as names or birthdays, in your passwords.
  • Use a random string of letters, numbers, and symbols, at least 8 characters long.
  • Never use the same password for two different accounts.
  • Never send passwords through email.
  • Never keep your passwords in a text file on your computer, no matter how secretly you have named it!

Can’t Remember All Those Passwords?

Ditch the little secret notebook, desktop sticky notes, and the mental gymnastics of trying to remember which cat’s name you used for your Facebook login.

Keep your passwords safe and organized in a secure password keeper, such as Roboform or PassPack. They’re free for basic use, and even fill out your logins for you.

Okay, now go change all those bad passwords!
